Identifying as Christians or Muslims is rubbish, I tell people the truth when they say it – Bishop Matthew Kukah.
Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, expressed his opinion that identifying solely based on regional, religious, or cultural backgrounds is meaningless. He believes that these identities hold no real significance. He posted this message to emphasize that we are all united, regardless of where we come from or our religious beliefs. It doesn’t matter if we are Christians or Muslims, or if we are from the East, West, North, or South.
Bishop Matthew Kukah expressed his belief that the fundamental structure of Nigeria has collapsed. He made it clear that categorizing people based on their Muslim or Christian identities goes against what it means to be Nigerian. He expressed concern about the dangerous outcomes of weaponizing identity, stating that it poses a significant risk to the peace of our nation, specifically Nigeria.
According to Bishop Matthew Kukah, “The four structures we constructed in Nigeria have fallen. Some people will say, We are Northerners, we are Muslims, we are Christians, we are Southerners, we are Igbos. Truth be told, all of those identifications are absolutely rubbish, because in part there is nothing like a Northener; it may be a Northener by geography. If you say we are all Muslims, what do you mean we are all Muslims? I’m saying that the instrumentalization of identity is a dangerous weapon”.
