The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 21 February 2024 – A Plea For Mercy
TOPIC: A Plea For Mercy
READ: Psalm 57: 1-11 (NKJV)
- To the Chief Musician. Set to “Do Not Destroy.” A Michtam of David when he fled from Saul into the cave. Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, Until [these] calamities have passed by.
- I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs [all things] for me.
- He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.
- My soul [is] among lions; I lie [among] the sons of men Who are set on fire, Whose teeth [are] spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword.
- Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; [Let] Your glory [be] above all the earth.
- They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they [themselves] have fallen. Selah
- My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
- Awake, my glory! Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.
- I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations.
- For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, And Your truth unto the clouds.
- Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; [Let] Your glory [be] above all the earth.
THE MESSAGE:
In this Psalm, David pleads for God’s mercy because he trusts in Him. He seeks for God’s protection from his calamities. He believes that God will send His mercy and truth to save him from those who want to destroy him. He also insists that his heart is steadfast in the Lord and that he will praise God among the peoples and sing to Him among the nations. Twice, he exalts and glorifies God for who He is.
In the Christian race, one is bound to experience difficulties, calamities, reproaches, and enmity from people. In all these cases, one should put one’s trust in the Lord, cry to Him for help, run the Christian race with endurance, and look unto Jesus (Hebrews 12: 2). Learn to first cry to God when you face serious challenges, before trying other options. Make God your priority by studying His word daily, praising His name and calling on Him in your prayers. He will surely deliver you. Are you going through a crisis in your life, family, work, church or country? Take it to the Lord in prayer. Make your plea for mercy and your situation will change for the better.
PRAYER: Precious Father; may Your mercy shine upon me in Jesus’ name. Amen.
