The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 7 February 2024 – Searching Without Revelation
TOPIC: Searching Without Revelation
READ: John 5: 39-47(NKJV)
- “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
- “But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
- “I do not receive honor from men.
- “But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
- “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
- “How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that [comes] from the only God?
- “Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is [one] who accuses you — Moses, in whom you trust.
- “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.
- “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
The MESSAGE:
In this passage, Jesus tells His Jewish critics that the Scriptures they search for eternal life, actually testify of Him; but they are unwilling to come and get life from Him. Jesus confronts them that they do not have God’s love and have rejected Him who came from God, since they do not seek the honour that comes from God. He also told them that Moses whom they trust would accuse them to the Father, and since they did not believe His words, they did not really believe Moses or his writings.
Although the Jews searched the Scriptures for eternal life, they failed to get the revelation that Jesus Christ is eternal life, and whoever has the Son has life (1 John 5: 11-12). Many people who go to church search the Scriptures but fail to receive God’s revelations. This means there is a problem. Have you received Christ into your life? If not, you better repent of your sins and call on Him to save you. Are you interested in seeking earthly titles, positions, degrees, appointments and possessions, but do not seek the honour that God gives? Please set your priorities right and seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Matt. 6: 33).
PRAYER: Father; please open my eyes to see Jesus as I search the Scriptures, Amen!
