According to the popular newspaper Punch, a devastating flood has hit the coastal areas of Ogun State, forcing many people to leave their homes. The flood was caused by a combination of factors, such as heavy rain, high sea levels, and water from the Oyan dam. The water level rose so high that it blocked part of the Warewa Road and submerged many houses.
The Ogun State Government has announced that some churches in the state have offered their campgrounds as temporary shelters for the flood victims. These churches are the Redeemed Christian Church of God, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, and the Deeper Christian Life Bible Ministry. They have opened their doors to welcome anyone who needs a place to stay.
The Environment Commissioner of Ogun State, Mr Oladimeji Oresanya, spoke to Saturday PUNCH on Friday and advised residents who want to move out of the flooded areas to contact the emergency teams. He said that the state emergency response teams and the National Emergency Management Agency have officials who can help them relocate.
One of the residents who had to abandon his home is Mr Paschal Uchendu, a landlord in the area. He told our correspondent on Friday that he left his house that day when the flood entered his house. He said that this flood is worse than the one that happened in 2019. He said that he and other landlords have never seen such a bad flood before.
He said that there are about 20 landlords and over 100 houses in his area. He said that many families have been affected by this problem. He said that he hopes that the government will do something to help them and prevent such a disaster from happening again.‘’
